Letter from Alice: We’re Here to Help You Navigate the Holiday Season
Happy November! We are now officially in the holiday season; coming up in just a few short weeks are Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Giving Tuesday, Hanukkah, and then of course Christmas and New Year’s Eve in December. This time of year is always a whirlwind of food and family, and before you know it, you’ll be giving gifts to loved ones and friends.
We know that the holidays can be a challenging time for our community, especially for those of you who are newly diagnosed with celiac disease or a gluten sensitivity. We at Beyond Celiac want to do all we can to help you manage this time of year, which is so heavily focused on traditional foods that you might not be able to eat anymore. Sometimes our families don’t understand, or are less than supportive, or may want you to eat the traditional stuffing because “one bite won’t hurt, will it?” Kudos to all of us when we stay resolute! For me, the immediate health consequences of accidental gluten exposure are so severe that I am not even a little tempted, but celiac disease can still leave us feeling left out and isolated at times.
To help navigate this busy season, we hope you will take advantage of our collection of holiday recipes. I bet you can surprise your Aunt Sylvia with a new gluten-free holiday favorite. And I have a favor to ask; would you consider having a serious one-on-one conversation with your relatives about their risk for celiac disease if you haven’t already? Perhaps you can help your Cousin Jerry get on the path to diagnosis and a brighter future. There is nothing more rewarding than giving the gift of health.
Speaking of gifts, if you yourself need any gift ideas, I invite you to consider making a donation to Beyond Celiac in a friend or loved one’s name. Aside from Christmas, the special occasions of Thanksgiving, Giving Tuesday, Hanukkah, and Black Friday are also great opportunities for donations. Accelerating research for a cure or treatments beyond the gluten-free diet is the gift that will keep on giving, and with our strategic science plan, renowned science team, and support of clinical trials and research, I am wholly confident that we will get that treatment or cure before 2030 with your support.
But we do need your support. Beyond Celiac is a nonprofit organization, and we run solely on the generosity of donors big and small. We extend our thanks to all past and current donors, and ask you to become a donor soon, if you aren’t already.
You can make a one-time donation now or you can become a recurring donor with Celiac Champions.
Happy holidays!
Together for a cure,
Alice
