Letter from Alice: To True Summer Relaxation

Ah summer. A time to cool off poolside, picnic at the beach, camp at a national park, and just take it easy. Unfortunately, celiac disease never takes a day off, so even when your goal is to relax, those of us with this chronic condition must remain alert.

Where has your food been? Who handled it? Are the ingredients gluten-free? Did they touch something with gluten? It’s not a great mental soundtrack for relaxation.

Fortunately, Beyond Celiac has the support you need to relax with confidence this summer. Our team includes many individuals who have experienced what you’re going through, and we provide hundreds of scientifically-backed resources for living with celiac disease.

Whether you’re sticking close to home or traveling abroad, check out these favorite summertime resources:

Now that you have your summertime tools in hand, let me ask you a question: What if you no longer needed to pack your own food for vacation? What if you could choose a great summer camp for your child, regardless of what kind of food they serve?

Imagine a treatment—beyond the gluten-free diet—that would allow you to eat safely in any environment. As much as we want to help you avoid gluten today, we want to build a world where real relaxation is always on the menu!

Doesn’t that sound like a dream? This is our vision, and with the help of people like you, we are working right now to make it a reality.

Given our track record of bringing dreams to life—like getting gluten-free beer produced and gluten-free food on grocery store shelves across the nation—we are confident that a world beyond celiac disease is not too far off. We have a robust science plan, an incredible team, and a network of collaborators working together and led by this shared vision.

Until we can live beyond the gluten-free diet, relish the season of sunshine and fun, knowing that all the while, Beyond Celiac is working to make it easier for you to truly relax wherever you find your summer enjoyment.

Together for a world beyond celiac,
—Alice Bast

Voices of Celiac: Gabrielle’s Story

“It began when I started to forget lyrics to songs, which was unusual for me since I had never experienced this problem before. From there, my health continued to decline until one morning I woke up and couldn’t feel my legs. My mom carried me into the car and drove me to the hospital, where I eventually left with no answers.”

Trivia Question of the Month

Question

Are herbs and spices gluten-free?

Answer

Yes, single-ingredient herbs and spices are gluten-free, like how raw fruits and vegetables are naturally gluten-free.

However, if you’re buying a seasoning mix, you’ll want to review the ingredients list, especially something like a soup or gravy mix, which can include wheat flour as a thickener.

Promising new test may eliminate the need to be eating gluten to get diagnosed with celiac disease

A new test developed by researchers in Australia has shown promising results in detecting a response to gluten in blood even when someone is on a gluten-free diet. Additionally, the test has the potential to eliminate the need for a biopsy to definitively diagnose celiac disease.

Momentum Builds for New ADINA Bill to Label Allergens in Drugs

Adina Togal’s family is stepping up their efforts to urge lawmakers to pass federal legislation for allergen transparency on drug labels.
