Letter from Alice: The Gift of Health
This holiday season, I’m thinking about the gift of health. I am so thankful that all those years ago, I was finally diagnosed with celiac disease and was able to take back control of my health. However, I’m also looking toward the future. The truth is, despite increases in diagnosis and the wider availability of gluten-free foods, the health of those with celiac disease has been compromised for far too long. This is a progressive disease that can cause long-term health consequences. Beyond Celiac is committed to a vision of a world in which people with celiac disease can live healthy lives to the fullest. Where they can fully heal and live free of fear of food. To make this vision a reality, we are focused on finding real treatments toward a cure by 2030. Because the true gift of health will come from a cure for this serious disease.
Thinking about the future always makes me think of children. I myself have a new grandchild, and with an increased susceptibility to celiac disease, I want to create a celiac-free future for him and everyone else touched by this disease. It is with him and all the other at-risk children in mind that I come to work each morning. And I am proud to say that this year Beyond Celiac has made great strides toward treatments and a cure by taking a 360-degree approach. We’ve recruited hundreds of patients for promising clinical trials. We’ve funded research into screening programs, gluten-related brain damage, and ribonucleic acid (RNA) sequencing. We are funding Established Investigator grants to keep the best and brightest scientists committed to celiac disease research and Early Career Research grants to attract exceptionally promising young investigators to the field. We partnered with Johnson & Johnson to accelerate exciting new science with a combined 1 million dollars in funding. All of this is a part of our commitment to creating a better world for our children.
