I hope October finds you enjoying the cooler air and the colors of the season wherever you call home. Autumn always inspires reflection and gratitude for me, and on that note, I want to share some of the successes we’ve enjoyed thanks to the dedicated support of you, the celiac disease community.
Six months into launching the first-ever venture philanthropy program dedicated to celiac disease research, we are thrilled to announce that we’ve exceeded our initial $2 million goal. This first significant milestone will enable us to infuse financial support into promising studies and reinvest in the drug development pipeline. With the expertise and leadership of our Beyond Celiac Investments (BCI) advisory committee, this will mark the first of many future investments we hope to make in accelerating treatments toward a cure for celiac disease. The swift response from our community and investors demonstrates the necessity and power behind unlocking this disease. If you’re interested in learning more about BCI, let’s connect!
As the seasons began shifting, we enjoyed a wave of awareness of both national and international celiac disease.
Another of my favorite fall activities is meeting community members at our in-person Step Beyond Celiac events. In September, it was great hearing stories and sharing gluten-free treats with our friends in Philadelphia and Boston, and I’m looking forward to meeting many new friends in Dallas later in October. If you are in the Dallas area, join us! Above all, thank you to all the volunteers and supporters who make these events a fun and impactful way to connect.
Another way to connect, especially if you’re interested in celiac disease research, is our Research Summit at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) on October 26. The morning will feature engaging presentations by Beyond Celiac-funded researchers, followed by a lively panel discussion focused on community perspectives. Your registration includes a gluten-free lunch and plenty of opportunities to meet other community members and ask questions. Register Now—I’d love to see you there!
As we head into the final stretch of 2024, we celebrate the year’s successes and remain focused on the urgency of our mission. Despite our strides, too many people with celiac disease continue to suffer, unable to find relief through a gluten-free diet alone. The need for treatments is clear, and it’s a challenge that, with your help, I know we will beat. Add your support to the Beyond Celiac mission today to help push us closer yet to finding treatments toward a cure for celiac disease.
I am deeply grateful for your unwavering support and hopeful for the future we are building together. We are making a significant difference in the lives of those affected by celiac disease, and it’s all thanks to your support. Let’s continue this work, striving for a future where celiac disease is no longer a burden. A future beyond celiac!
Together for a cure,
—Alice Bast, CEO

QUESTION: In 2018, what percent of people diagnosed with celiac disease were 60 years or older?
ANSWER: In 2018, scientists from Finland and the United Kingdom found that one in four (25%) of those diagnosed with celiac disease were 60 years or older. Read more about celiac disease over the span of life, or read the journal article.
For those with celiac disease, an endoscopy and biopsy may not be a major barrier to participating in clinical trials and intestinal healing is an important result when celiac disease patients consider potential treatments, Beyond Celiac research finds.
25% of Black Americans who should be tested for celiac disease are being missed
Nearly one in four non-Hispanic Black Americans who have conditions that should lead to a test for celiac disease never get one, according to data presented by Beyond Celiac at the International Celiac Disease Symposium.
New insight into how and where the response to gluten in celiac disease begins
The answers to how and where the response to gluten in celiac disease begins have been found in the single layer of cells that line the small intestine, according to new research led by McMaster University researchers.

Ann Horsburgh of Florida State University and Liz Bingham Thomas of Brigham Young University are conducting research to understand how familial support influences the experiences of people with celiac disease. They are recruiting people with celiac disease who live anywhere in the US and who are at least 18 years old. If you participate in their survey, not only will you have their tremendous gratitude, you will be entered into a raffle to win a $50 gift card.
This survey intends to provide greater clarity on the experiences that people with celiac disease have when exposed to gluten, including the top symptoms with a negative impact and how symptoms and gluten exposure negatively impact quality of life.
If you’re signed up for Go Beyond Celiac, we invite you to log in and complete this survey. If you haven’t already joined, please become a member of Go Beyond Celiac and start sharing your story today.

“In my early 20s, I became a flight attendant for Emirates, which introduced me to new symptoms. I developed skin dermatitis and breathing allergies so severe they almost cost me my life. I eventually resigned from my position.
Once I went gluten-free, I saw significant improvements. My allergies, IBS, gastritis, esophagitis, and even my breathing issues improved. Since then, I’ve become passionate about advocating and educating others about celiac disease. It’s been a challenging journey, but I hope to help others navigate their own path toward diagnosis and healing.”

Beyond Celiac Chief Medical Officer Dr. Jordan Dubow gives an overview of the clinical trials process in this Town Hall.
