Letter from Alice: Happy Celiac Awareness Month!
Happy Celiac Awareness Month! We have so much going on here at Beyond Celiac and so many ways for you to get involved, learn, raise awareness, and help accelerate research for treatments and a cure! I can’t wait to tell you about it.
First, we are IN IT TO WIN IT! We have returned for the fifth year of the Step Beyond Celiac 5K, and we invite you to sign up, raise money, and run or walk to support the effort. As I write this, we are already 76% to our goal of raising $65,000 to support our research initiatives and other vital programs. You can help put us over the top!
Next, we have big plans to raise awareness, and you can help! Not only have we created and organized loads of shareable facts, infographics, videos and more on our website, we will be announcing big news later in the month. If you don’t already follow us on Instagram or Facebook, now’s the time so you can stay in the know. Plus, we are collaborating internationally with other celiac disease organizations to Shine a Light on celiac disease. Perhaps a building near you will light up in acknowledgement of this serious genetic autoimmune disease.
And as part of Celiac Awareness Month, we hope you will take a little time to find out more about the latest in celiac disease research. We posted recordings from the Beyond Celiac 2022 Research Summit and we expect you hear information that you won’t have found anywhere else. Could the prevalence rate of celiac disease really be higher than thought? If people could get diagnosed earlier, how much could the risk of damage to brain structures be cut? Even after your intestinal villi are repaired, does the lining of the small intestine really return to its former structure? I bet you learn something new for sure. I look forward to hearing your thoughts…..
We will also be hosting a special Town Hall with medical doctors Dan Leffler and Doug Jacobstein, both of whom are involved in research for treatments in celiac disease. Bring your questions and learn more about the clinical trials process!
Celiac disease is serious business, but it is heartening that we can all come together during May to raise our voices and raise awareness, so that we can live life to the fullest and eat without fear.
Together for a cure,
-Alice Bast
