Washington, DC Named “World’s Most Celiac-Friendly Destination”

Decision based on dining and travel reviews submitted in 2010.

If you have celiac disease or gluten intolerance, DC is the place to be, according to travelers’ reviews.

GlutenFreeTravelSite dubbed the nation’s capital “World’s Most Celiac-Friendly Destination,” in its 3rd annual contest.

The decision was based on user-generated reviews submitted to GlutenFreeTravelSite. According to the announcement, Washington, DC, and its surrounding suburbs had an “impressive showing” in dining and travel reviews submitted by the gluten-free community. Users commended both independent and chain restaurants in the area for offering safe options for celiac and gluten-free diners.

“Many cities in the DC area, like Bethesda and McLean, offer numerous gluten-free dining options,” said Sandra Robins, one of NFCA’s Celiac Bloggers who blogs as the DC Gluten-Free Examiner and Gluten-Free Optimist. “New gluten-free menus are being discovered regularly, providing diners with significantly more choices than 4 years ago, when I was initially diagnosed with celiac disease.”

Previous winners of the contest include New York, based on 2008 reviews, and Orlando, FL, based on reviews submitted in 2009.
