The Celiac Disease Infertility Connection

More research indicates a gluten-free diet may play a role in solving infertility.

Late last month the journal Fertility Sterility published a case report of a 30-year old woman diagnosed with primary infertility (a term that describes couples who have not been able to become pregnant after at least 1 year of unprotected sex). Upon presentation, the female patient was found to have anemia and a high tTG. She was then diagnosed with celiac disease after undergoing a biopsy and immediately began a gluten-free diet. Eight months later the patient became pregnant. The authors concluded that patients with infertility and unexplained anemia should be tested for celiac disease. It was also suggested that the gluten-free diet can play a role in solving the infertility.
