Beyond Celiac Statement on Covid-19 Vaccination

February 1, 2021

Updated March 10, 2021

Beyond Celiac encourages all members of the celiac disease community to receive a COVID-19 vaccine as soon as they are able. Both currently approved mRNA vaccines require two doses to be effective, while the DNA vaccine requires one dose. You should make the decision to receive the vaccine in consultation with your doctor, who knows your personal health history. The Beyond Celiac recommendation is based on CDC guidelines along with publicly available evidence and the expert opinion of our science team.

There are three COVID-19 vaccines currently available under Emergency Use Authorization in the United States, developed by Pfizer, Moderna and Janssen (Johnson & Johnson). Clinical trials of these vaccines show they are highly effective.

Each state has its own criteria for prioritizing the distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine, using the guidance of the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and based on health and demographic factors. Visit your state or local health department website to find guidance on distribution prioritization. Those with health conditions and demographic factors that put them most at risk of severe illness are encouraged to receive a vaccine as soon as it is available.

While vaccine distribution continues, it remains important to continue to wear a mask and limit your interactions with people outside your household.
