North explains challenges of detecting celiac disease, urges testing before going gluten-free.
NFCA Vice President Jennifer North recently shared her personal connection to celiac disease for an article on “Celiac Disease and Childhood Food Allergies.” The article gave a basic overview of celiac disease, including the damaging effects it can have when left untreated.
North’s daughter, Molly (see right), was diagnosed at age 15 after suffering unexplained weight loss. Her health improved after switching to a gluten-free diet. “Celiac has over 300 symptoms, so there really isn’t a typical profile,” North told the author. “It can onset at any age.”
She also emphasized that individuals should contact their doctor and get tested for celiac disease before adopting a gluten-free diet.
