Gearing Up for Summer Camp Season

With the right resources, it’s possible for your gluten-free child to safely head off to summer camp.

By Claire Baker, NFCA Director of Communications and New Media

Here in the mid-Atlantic, we are in the midst of a typical February — clumps of graying snow glazed over with layers of freeze-thaw-freeze iciness on lawns and the side of the highway. It makes it hard to believe that it’s time to make arrangements for summer camp. Waiting too long to make plans can lead to the disaster of a kid making popsicle stick art instead of learning computer coding at Minecraft camp.

Even with early planning, as a mom of a tween and a teen, I know what it means to not be able to find that perfect intersection of interest, cost, location and timing. It’s even harder if your son or daughter has celiac disease or gluten sensitivity. You want your kid’s memorable experience to be about that awesome canoe trip, not spending field day in the latrine, after all.

Which is why, when the editors of CampNavigator contacted us for a story about managing summer camp with celiac disease, we were happy to contribute. We know that camps, when prompted by parents who are deciding where to send their kids, may be very interested in our GREAT Schools, Colleges and Camps program.

Check out CampNavigator, and nominate the camp of your choice for the GREAT Schools, Colleges and Camps giveaway. As more camps get GREAT-trained, the more choices there will be to choose from, and the greater comfort you will have this summer.
