Celiac Disease on The Dr. Oz Show

Visual exercise featuring real intestines give shock factor to celiac disease education.

A recent episode of “The Dr. Oz Show” featured a segment on celiac disease. “The symptoms are vast and may be different than you think,” the host noted.

To give viewers a visual understanding of the damage celiac disease can inflict, Dr. Oz brought two audience members up on stage to stretch out real instestines. When celiac disease is left untreated, the healthy villi in those instestines flatten, preventing the body from absorbing nutrients, he explained.

Dr. Oz then spread a parachute over the entire audience to show the surface area of the intestines. Audience members were surprised by the large area that is vulnerable to damage from undiagnosed or misdiagnosed celiac disease.

The host finished up the segment by looking at gluten-free and gluten-containing foods. Gluten can hide in unlikely places like condiments, he noted.
