Celebs Going Gluten-Free: Helpful or Harmful?

An online slideshow features celebrities and their reasons for going gluten-free.

Gluten-free is certainly a trending topic in the world of the rich and famous. It seems like every day there’s a new celebrity touting the benefits of a gluten-free diet, whether it’s for a medical reason or perceived weight loss benefits.

ABCNews.com recently added a slideshow of celebrities who are on a gluten-free diet, accompanied by captions explaining why the celebrity went gluten-free. Some, like Lady Gaga, say they are losing weight from the diet, while others like Keith Olbermann, Jennifer Esposito and Elizabeth Hasselbeck have been diagnosed with celiac disease. Miley Cyrus says she is sensitive to gluten and attributes her recent weight loss to the diet, while Zooey Deschanel has wheat, egg and dairy sensitivities. Do you think this sort of celebrity recap from the media is helpful or harmful to the celiac and gluten sensitive community? Do you think it clarifies or confuses the distinction between the gluten-free diet as a medical necessity vs. a lifestyle choice? Weigh in on the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness (NFCA) Facebook page.

Check out the slideshow from ABC News to see other celebrities adopting a gluten-free diet.
