Hi! My name is Alaina Pinto and I am from Long Island, New York. I am a junior in high school. I was diagnosed with celiac disease in September 2021.
Journey to Diagnosis
During the COVID-19 pandemic I developed symptoms of celiac disease, such as weight loss and stomach pain among others. After a few doctor visits and an endoscopy, I was told I had celiac disease. I never had dietary restrictions before, so this was a period of great adjustment for me. Nevertheless, my family helped me in my transition. We found gluten-free restaurants and recipes that lifted my spirits. As time passed, I realized that I wasn’t alone in my disease. Additionally, I learned the importance of maintaining a strict gluten-free diet, prompting me to advocate for myself.
Becoming an Advocate
Science, specifically biology, and research are two subjects that I commit a significant portion of my time to. My interest in these fields was enhanced after my diagnosis. As I look towards the future, I see myself contributing to the field of medicine with my research.
As a Beyond Celiac Ambassador, I am eager to help others adapt to a new lifestyle and encourage them to gain confidence in educating and advocating for themselves.
