Gluten in Skin Care Products

February 22, 2011

Question:

I have been diagnosed for 3 years and my celiac symptoms are under control. I recently bought a body oil product for stretch marks and didn’t realize that the main ingredient is wheat germ oil. Can individuals with celiac disease absorb gluten through bath and beauty products, and will it have the same effect? I’ve only used the oil a couple of times, but I don’t want to keep using it if it’s a risk. Thanks!

From,

Katie

Answer:

Hi Katie. This is an excellent question, as many bath and body products do contain gluten. You’ll be happy to know that gluten CANNOT be absorbed through the skin from skin care products. However, you do want to avoid having the product come into contact with your lips and mouth, as you can accidentally ingest it that way. While we are on the topic of health and beauty products, you should know that dental products can contain gluten, so check with the manufacturer on these products. Enjoy the body oil!

Sincerely,

Rachel Begun, MS, RD
