When I founded Beyond Celiac in 2003, we were intent on helping patients get diagnosed and manage the day-to-day struggles of maintaining a gluten-free diet. Starting out, we led the charge for ensuring gluten-free food was accessible and affordable for our community, because unlike a condition that has a treatment, our community confronts celiac disease multiple times a day—at home, at restaurants, at parties, at work events, on campus, and even in preschool.
Whether you’re diagnosed with celiac disease or know someone who is, it’s easy to see how exhausting the diet can be.
Living with celiac disease myself and seeing the toll it takes on so many, I kept asking: What if we had a world where we could eat without fear? What if we could live in a world Beyond Celiac?
We have made strides toward identifying and addressing roadblocks to the diagnosis and treatment of celiac disease by funding $3.2 million in international research, partnering with pharmaceutical agencies to recruit for clinical trials, and uniting members of academia, government agencies, and pharmaceutical, biotech, and diagnostic companies in our first-of-its-kind Beyond Celiac Coalition.
In February 2024, we launched our boldest initiative yet: Beyond Celiac Investments. This new venture philanthropy fund will exponentially accelerate the development of treatments with an initial investment of over $2 million.
Twenty years ago, it seemed nearly impossible to be where we are today. I can envision the day when our kids don’t have to worry about missing school or their activities. With your support, we are poised to find the first treatment for celiac disease beyond the gluten-free diet and realize the dream of eating without fear. In that spirit, please join us in striding toward a future where we can all eat without fear. A world beyond the gluten-free diet is so close and together, we can make it happen!
There are dozens of ways to get involved this Celiac Awareness Month, but here are a few of my favorites:
With your help, we’ve come so far. With your help, we’ll get to a cure!
Together for a cure!

This is a recipe for the folks with a sweet tooth! It starts with a sugar cookie base, frosted with cream cheese and chocolate sauce, and topped with whichever fruits you prefer. This is a dish best enjoyed with others—word to the wise, it’s better cut in squares, not triangles!
A fast and easy recipe for tender ribs worthy of being the main course at any expensive restaurant. You could also try making it in a slow cooker, which would take 6 to 8 hours.
This recipe was provided courtesy of our friends at the Gluten-Free Palate.
We have our sights set on a cure for celiac disease! Every step you take helps get us closer to our goal. Proceeds raised from our Step Beyond Celiac 5Ks support our work to accelerate treatments and a cure for celiac disease.
Until we reach the ultimate finish line—a cure for celiac disease—we’ll be putting our energy into helping people with celiac disease live better longer. Lace up your running shoes, set up your personal or team fundraiser, and let’s all get 3.1 miles closer to a cure! Register by May 12 to get your race t-shirt.
Take our Go Beyond Celiac annual survey!
This brief, annual survey will help both Beyond Celiac and researchers better understand how our community members’ celiac disease symptoms, challenges, attitudes, and behaviors evolve year to year.
If you’re signed up for Go Beyond Celiac, we invite you to log in and complete this year’s Annual Celiac Disease Survey. If you haven’t already joined, please become a member of Go Beyond Celiac and start sharing your story today.
This survey closes soon, so don’t miss out! Every story shared brings us one step closer to a cure.

Price Caps on Asthma Inhalers a Big Win, But Barriers Remain
Asthma advocacy groups are applauding the move by major pharmaceutical companies to cap the price of their respiratory inhalers. The out-of-pocket costs for some asthma patients in the United States will be no higher than $35 per month.
Please join us on May 31 for a special Celiac Awareness Month edition of our virtual Town Halls! Our guest Dr. Ana Vanessa Wren will discuss mental health and celiac disease.

Each May we team up with other celiac disease organizations from across the globe to #ShineALightOnCeliac. Check out the website to see if anything near you will be green!
