Tennis Legend Reveals Struggle with Gluten Intolerance

Martina Navratilova is among gluten-free athletes in tennis community.

In a recent interview with The Daily Express, nine-time Wimbledon singles champion Martina Navratilova admitted that she suffers from gluten intolerance.

After overcoming breast cancer last year, this tennis star’s health is something very important to her. The cancer failed to restrict her fitness regimen, but her diet certainly changed. After finding out about her gluten intolerance, she realized her energy levels were becoming affected.

“’When I was tested positive I’d barely heard of gluten intolerance but [Wimbledon winner Novak] Djokovic is gluten-free as is another player Sabine Lisicki. She had some serious issues, she was bloated and had no energy but since she’s been gluten-free she’s been great.’”

Although initially challenged by the diet, Martina has since been able to find alternatives to some of her favorites!

“There is one downside to the diet. ‘I miss the beer,’ says Martina. ‘But there is gluten-free beer. It’s quite nice actually.’”

After acknowledging that a gluten-free diet is critical to her health – it sounds like Martina is back on the right track!
