Flyers to raise awareness for Celiac Disease
Philadelphia, PA – January 14, 2010 – The Philadelphia Flyers will raise awareness for celiac disease when the team hosts the Columbus Blue Jackets at the Wachovia Center on Tuesday, January 19 at 7 p.m. The National Foundation for Celiac Awareness (NFCA) will help the Flyers educate fans about celiac disease through informational booths on the concourse, public service announcements, and facts about celiac disease throughout the game on the center hung score board.
“The Flyers are committed to raising awareness and education for celiac disease. Celiac disease is an important issue that affects too many,” said Shawn Tilger, Flyers Senior Vice President of Business Operations. “We are proud to partner with the NFCA to promote community awareness for celiac disease and know that our fans will support us in this endeavor.”
Flyers fans can also enjoy gluten-free food at the concession stand located behind section 122 at the Wachovia Center. This special gluten-free concession stand is available for all Flyers, 76ers, and Wachovia Center events throughout the year and offers a wide variety of gluten-free food and beverages.
Celiac disease is a digestive disease that damages the small intestine and interferes with absorption of nutrients from food. People who have celiac disease cannot tolerate gluten, a protein in wheat, rye, and barley. Gluten is found mainly in foods but may also be found in everyday products such as medicines, vitamins, and lip balms. As doctors become more aware of the many varied symptoms of the disease and reliable blood tests become more available, diagnosis rates are increasing.
