Letter from Alice: Embracing a New Year of Hope and Progress
Happy New Year! As we step into 2024, I am delighted to update you on the exciting journey we are collectively undertaking and the promising path that lies ahead.
I want to express my sincere gratitude to each of you for the outstanding success of our December fundraising campaign, “Hope for a Celiac Cure.” Thanks to a generous matching contribution and the incredible support from our community, we not only met but surpassed our goal of $50,000. “Hope for a Celiac Cure” symbolizes our shared aspiration: a world where individuals with celiac disease can eat without fear. It represents the strength of unity, where hearts unite to champion cutting-edge scientific research.
Our hope for a cure for celiac disease is grounded in the steadfast progress that Beyond Celiac has been tirelessly pursuing. In our endeavor to expedite research for treatments and, ultimately, a cure, we stand shoulder to shoulder with you. Our commitment to funding the most promising research remains resolute. Together, we are hastening the pace of discovery, financing studies, supporting clinical trials, and exploring innovative approaches that hold the key to a future free from celiac disease.
As we enter the new year, our collective dedication to excellence and innovation sets the tone for the upcoming twelve months and beyond. With new additions to the Beyond Celiac team, we are positioned to continue supporting our community while making significant strides that have the potential to transform lives and pave the way for groundbreaking advancements. I am confident that with the passion and expertise of our team, we will attain new heights of success. We stand on the verge (or threshold) of a new chapter, armed with the lessons of the past and the enthusiasm for what lies ahead.
As a shared New Year’s resolution, I invite each of you to play an active role in expediting research for treatments and a cure by joining the Go Beyond Celiac patient registry. Your participation can have a substantial impact by providing vital data that accelerates research efforts. Together, let’s amplify our voice and propel progress toward a cure.
Because of your unwavering support, dedication, passion, and tireless efforts, I am confident that 2024 holds immense promise for our community, and I eagerly anticipate achieving new milestones together.
Wishing you a year filled with success, growth, and fulfillment,
Alice Bast, CEO

Research News
Dr. Arnold Han, MD PhD sat down with us to discuss his research into the role of CD8 T-cells in celiac disease, and where he hopes it leads. You can watch a replay of the event on our YouTube channel. This event was possible thanks to our friends at Crunchmaster Crackers!
Get Involved in Research
LILY Study
The LILY study is a celiac disease study that will measure the safety of the study medication, DONQ52, at targeting an immune complex known to cause celiac disease symptoms. There is no gluten challenge in this study. You may be compensated for time and travel.
ILLUMINATE-062 Study
Participants are needed for the ILLUMINATE-062 Study, which is looking at the safety and effectiveness of an investigational medication designed to break down gluten in the stomach compared with placebo in those with celiac disease who are on a gluten-free diet. The study will evaluate how well the investigational medication reduces celiac-related symptoms and intestinal damage due to gluten exposure.
Participants who have been diagnosed with celiac, which was confirmed by a biopsy, and have been on a gluten-free diet for at least 12 months are needed. Study-related care is provided at no cost and a travel stipend may be provided.
Voices of Celiac: Katerina’s Story
“Her PCP and the doctors at the ER would say she had either a stomach bug or the flu (due to being in daycare). I started to question how often one child can get the stomach bug and flu in a month.
I called her health insurance, filed various grievances and an emergency complaint. They expedited the referral and she was finally able to begin care with a pediatric gastroenterologist.“
Allergic Living Spotlight
The Trouble with Airline Meals and Food Allergies
“Are food allergy labels on airline meals accurate? Are they even required to be? As airline meals have been a gray area of food allergen labeling, Allergic Living asked me to investigate the rules, in my role as their airlines correspondent. I reached out to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The agency’s answers were concerning.”
