Legendary Guest: Researcher Carlo Catassi
Dr. Carlo Catassi has studied celiac disease for more than 30 years, publishing groundbreaking studies on disease prevalence and thresholds for gluten, as well as the Salerno criteria, used to diagnose non-celiac gluten sensitivity. Since 1993, he’s worked as a professor at the Polytechnic University of Marche, and from 2013 to 2016, he served as president of the Italian Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (SIGENP). Since the early 2000s he collaborated with Prof. Alessio Fasano for clinical and research activities, first at the University of Baltimore and then at the MassGeneral Hospital for Children | Pediatric Gastroenterology & Nutrition in Boston.
A few of his notable studies include prevalence studies in Saharawi and Brazilian populations; establishing a threshold of 20 ppm for gluten-free food; determining a process for diagnosing non-celiac gluten sensitivity; and mass screening Italian schoolchildren.
We are overjoyed to speak with such an illustrious trailblazer—he’s a legendary guest!
