Is Sugar Gluten-Free?

Yes, raw sugar is naturally gluten-free. This includes white sugar, brown sugar, and molasses.

Powdered sugar is usually gluten-free, but in rare cases may contain wheat starch.

What is sugar?

Sugar comes from either sugar beets or sugar cane, both of which contain a syrup called molasses. White sugar is purified to remove all the molasses, while brown sugar retains some molasses, which is why is has a darker color.

Piles of different types of sugar.

Because brown sugar contains some molasses, it has a richer flavor and more moisture. White sugar is flavorless and drier, so it won’t clump as easily as brown sugar.

Granulated sugar, castor sugar, coarse sugar, light brown sugar, dark brown sugar, demerara sugar, turbinado sugar, and muscovado sugar are all naturally gluten-free.
