Are Chia Seeds Gluten-Free?

A cup of wet chia seeds next to a scoop of dry chia seeds. Yes, chia seeds are naturally gluten-free.

What Are Chia Seeds?

Chia seeds are a plant native to Mexico and the southwest United States. The small seeds can absorb up to 12 times their weight in liquid, which creates a gel texture that makes it a useful substitute for eggs in vegan and allergen-free cooking and baking. It also makes it a fun addition to novelty beverages. When dry, chia seeds are used in granola bars and snacks.

Chia seeds are also used to make the novelty item Chia Pets.

From a nutrition standpoint, chia seeds are rich in protein, omega-3 fatty acids, B vitamins, calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, zinc, and more. They are a great addition to the gluten-free diet!
