Maizy Boosin gives celiac disease some air time after her win on the hit TV show.
At only 12 years old, Chopped Junior champion Maizy Boosin has some serious culinary skills. Boosin competed against three other junior chefs on the Food Network’s pint-sized version of the popular TV cooking show on Tuesday night. Not only did Boosin show off her expertise and innovation in the kitchen, but she also did it while cooking completely gluten-free.
“I’m gluten-free because I have celiac disease, which is an autoimmune disease,” said Boosin in the episode.
She avoided using soy sauce to make a dish with spicy peanut butter sauce, correctly noting that soy sauce contains gluten. Instead, she improvised with other available ingredients.
“Soy sauce is derived from wheat, so it does have gluten in it. I used rice wine vinegar and a little bit of water that the scallions were in to thicken it.”
Boosin plans to donate at least half of the $10,000 prize to a celiac disease organization to help “educate people on celiac disease and finding a treatment for celiac.” And what will she do with the other half? Boosin wants to get her hands on tickets to see Hamilton on Broadway.
