Blazing a Trail for People with Celiac Disease

Beyond Celiac CEO Alice Bast receives the Philadelphia Magazine Trailblazer Award for her work in the celiac disease field.

When Alice Bast was diagnosed with celiac disease nearly 25 years ago, few physicians knew about celiac disease. Those lucky enough to be accurately diagnosed would find that gluten-free food, their only treatment, was scarce and expensive.

Today, more people than ever are accurately diagnosed with this serious genetic autoimmune disease. When people are diagnosed, they are able to find gluten-free food in nearly every grocery store. And that’s because of Alice Bast and her organization Beyond Celiac.

Founded in 2003, Beyond Celiac (then the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness) set out to make gluten-free food safe, accessible, and affordable. Now, Beyond Celiac is setting its sights on a cure so our community can live life to the fullest and eat without fear.

On February 24, 2017, Alice was awarded The Trailblazer Award by Philadelphia Magazinefor her work in the field of celiac disease. To hear Alice’s personal celiac disease story and her acceptance speech at her award ceremony, check out the Facebook Live stream below.
