My name is Emma and I’m from New York City. I was diagnosed with celiac disease in January 2021 during my freshman year at Oberlin College. Navigating the transition to a gluten-free lifestyle was especially difficult in a rural Ohio town with limited food options and even harder when I was denied housing and dining accommodations. I experienced food insecurity firsthand, and it definitely impacted my college experience.

These challenges inspired me to become an advocate. No one should have to fight for safe, accessible food or basic accommodations. I’m now pursuing my Master’s in social work so I can support and empower others living with celiac disease. I’m grateful to be back in NYC, where gluten-free options are easier to find, but I know that’s not the reality for everyone. As a Reach Beyond Celiac Ambassador, I’m committed to raising awareness, building community, and pushing for the systemic changes we need.
