Problem: It is unclear and extremely difficult to determine if medications contain gluten.

Solution: Beyond Celiac has both educated pharmacists and sought clarity through FDA-funded research.

Beginning in 2008, Beyond Celiac offered the free online GREAT Pharmacists program. This program has since expired, however, it educated more than 1,000 pharmacy professionals about how to accommodate and inform the celiac disease community to ensure the safety of their medications. In addition, Beyond Celiac propelled a groundbreaking FDA-funded study completed in partnership with St. John’s University, documenting the risk of gluten in medications, the lack of proper labeling of inactive ingredients and the fear of health risks expressed by thousands of participants. Since there is no required FDA labeling of drugs, this ongoing work provides one of the greatest opportunities for progress in improving the consistency, quality and availability of gluten-free medications.
