Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania are looking to explain why individuals with anemia crave and eat ice.

The connection between celiac disease and iron deficiency anemia is well established. Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania are looking for people who have iron deficiency anemia to participate in a study on ice chewing. The researchers seek to understand why it is that individuals with anemia crave and eat ice.

Who can participate?

Anyone age 18 and older who is anemic is eligible to participate.

What does this study entail?

You will be asked to visit the University of Pennsylvania and complete a number of tasks – including tests of memory and reaction time on a computer game. You CANNOT eat ice or consume anything cold for at least ONE HOUR before participating. The study will take approximately one hour to complete. You may either bring information about your hemoglobin levels to your appointment or the researchers can contact your physician (with your consent!) to obtain this information.

When can I participate?

The researchers are scheduling participants right now. Email Brittany Atuahene ([email protected]) to schedule a time.

Will I be compensated in any way?

The researchers are not able to pay you for your time. If you are interested, they can send you information about the results of this study. The researchers hope that the study will help to explain why individuals who have anemia tend to crave and eat ice.
