Gluten-Free Hygiene: Hair Care

While you don’t eat hair products, ensuring your shampoo and other hair care products are gluten-free can still be important to provide peace of mind for those with celiac disease, especially if you have a young child who might accidentally swallow some shampoo during bath time. Here’s what you need to know:

Why Gluten-Free Hair Care Matters

For most people with celiac disease, using hair care products with gluten isn’t typically a problem since gluten cannot be absorbed through the skin. However, avoiding gluten in topical products can be beneficial for those with open wounds, sensitive skin, or young children (who may accidentally ingest products).

Identifying Gluten in Hair Care Products

When selecting gluten-free hair care products, it’s important to read the ingredients list carefully. If you want gluten-free hair care products, you’ll want to avoid products containing:

  • Wheat (Triticum vulgare)
  • Barley (Hordeum vulgare)
  • Rye (Secale cereale)
  • Oats (unless labeled gluten-free)
  • Hydrolyzed wheat protein
  • Triticum
  • Hordeum
  • Secale

Gluten-Free Shampoos & Conditioners

To ensure your shampoo and conditioner are gluten-free, check the ingredients list and avoid any products containing wheat, barley, rye, triticum, hordeum, or secale.

Here are some brands that offer gluten-free shampoos and/or conditioners*:

  • Desert Essence
  • EO Products
  • Pravana
  • PURA D’OR
  • Olaplex
  • Rahua
  • Acure

These brands provide various gluten-free options to cater to your hair care needs.

Gluten-Free Hair Dye

The issue with gluten in hair dye is similar to that in other personal care products. While no one intentionally ingests hair dye, those with gluten sensitivities or celiac disease might prefer to avoid gluten altogether for peace of mind. Many hair dyes contain gluten-derived ingredients such as hydrolyzed wheat protein, wheat starch, and barley extract. Here are some brands that offer gluten-free hair dyes*:

  • EcoColors: Known for being gluten-free, sulfate-free, and paraben-free.
  • Garnier Fructis: Their hair color lines, including Nutrisse and Nutrisse Ultra-Color, do not contain gluten. These products are widely available.
  • Herbatint: This brand offers permanent herbal hair colors that are gluten-free and vegan.
  • Manic Panic: A popular brand known for vibrant hair colors, all Manic Panic products are gluten-free and vegan.
  • dpHUE: Their Gloss+ line is a semi-permanent, color-boosting hair dye that is gluten-free and vegan.

Henna and other plant-based dyes, such as indigo, are excellent alternatives for those preferring natural solutions. Plant-based hair dyes offer a more natural way to color hair while reducing environmental impact.

Gluten-Free Hair Styling Products

Rounding out the options for gluten-free hair care, numerous styling products are available to meet various needs. From hairspray to mousse, pomade, styling gel, dry shampoo, hair oil, and beard oil, those with celiac disease and gluten sensitivity have gluten-free options in each category. If you’re unsure about a product, always check the label and, if necessary, contact the manufacturers for confirmation.
