Child at Risk for Developing Celiac Disease

Question:

My 6-month-old baby is at increased risk for celiac disease because I have celiac. He’s exclusively breastfed. What else can I do to minimize his risk of developing celiac disease, and when should I introduce gluten into his diet? Currently his only solid foods are banana and sweet potato.

Answer:

We suggest continuing breast feeding with the introduction of small amounts of gluten in the diet. Gluten should be introduced around 6 months of age. You may also consider obtaining the genetic markers for celiac. Be advised that if your child has the marker, this does not confirm that they will develop celiac.

Sincerely,

Center for Celiac Disease at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia
