Letter from Alice: Celebrating Achievements and Looking Forward

As we transition into the brisk and colorful days of November, it’s a perfect time to reflect on our accomplishments and express our gratitude. With the end of our fiscal year in October, we have much to be proud of, and I’m excited to share some of the remarkable milestones that we’ve achieved because of the generous support of our community.
- Welcome Debra Silberg, MD, PhD, FACG: We are excited to welcome our new Chief Scientific Officer, Debra Silberg, MD, PhD. Dr. Silberg’s extensive expertise will be transformational in ensuring our community can live life to the fullest. With her guidance and leadership, we are poised to make even greater strides in our mission.
- Partnership with Dylan Dreyer: I’m thrilled to announce our exciting partnership with Dylan Dreyer of the 3rd Hour of TODAY. Together, we aim to raise awareness, educate, and provide hope to the millions of people affected by celiac disease. Dylan’s passion for our cause, especially in helping children and families, is truly commendable, and we’re looking forward to achieving great things together.
- International Grant-Making: We are delighted to announce that we’ve extended our support to international researchers. Thanks to your unwavering dedication, we’ve been able to make new grant commitments that will contribute to a global effort to better understand celiac disease and find a cure. In 2023 we made more than $1.6M in grants, bringing our total since 2016 to more than $3M. Those grants are funding researchers that might not have stayed in the field of celiac disease, uncovering more and more pieces of the puzzle about who gets celiac disease, why or why not, how we can test for it without a biopsy, how we might one day treat it, and how we might prevent it in the future.
- Cutting-Edge Research: Beyond Celiac has been at the forefront of groundbreaking research. We’re thrilled to inform you that our very own original research was presented at international conferences. Beyond Celiac is illuminating disparities in access to diagnosis and care and also revealing that our community is not satisfied with gluten-free diet as the only way to hopefully get and stay well. Original research with the support of our community not only highlights the significance of our work but also underscores our commitment to advancing knowledge in the field.
- Community Engagement: Our community continues to grow, and we couldn’t be happier. Throughout the past year, we’ve had the pleasure of connecting with more than 1,300 of community members who participated in our Step Beyond Celiac 5K events and our Community Summit. With three in-person events and one virtual event, we came together, united by our shared goal of finding a cure for celiac disease. Your enthusiasm and support inspire us every day.
All these achievements are possible because of your unwavering support and commitment to the mission of Beyond Celiac. We’re deeply thankful for your trust and partnership.
As we move into our fiscal year 2024, we are more motivated than ever. We are determined to keep pushing boundaries, bringing us closer to treatments and ultimately a cure for celiac disease. Our journey is far from over, and with your support, we are confident that we will have treatments beyond the gluten-free diet by 2030 so that we can eat without fear and live life to the fullest.
Thank you for being an integral part of the Beyond Celiac community. Wishing you all a wonderful November and a season filled with gratitude and joy.
Together for a cure,
Alice Bast
Who said eating vegetables has to be an annoying chore before getting to the good stuff? This green bean casserole is the good stuff! Tasty, rich, and textured, this side dish is sure to be a hit at any get-together.
No Thanksgiving would be complete without a sweet treat to finish off the meal. Combine two holiday classics into one with the cranberry pecan tart! The whole family is sure to love this gluten-free confection.

Beyond Celiac—NMQF Research Published In American Journal of Gastroenterology
Original research done in a partnership between Beyond Celiac and Haley Zylberberg, MD, during her fellowship at Columbia University, has been published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology.
The study, published as a research letter, found that a higher income, living in an urban area and living close to a celiac disease center are all positively correlated with celiac disease prevalence, while being Black or Latino/Hispanic is negatively correlated. Read about it on the Beyond Celiac website.
Voices of Celiac: Bob’s Story
“I just turned 80 years old and I think I have a very good life. I am so glad they found out I had celiac disease about eight years ago. Celiac disease has caused me a lot of pain and discomfort for over 20 years.
On the positive side, having celiac disease gave me opportunities to meet some very wonderful people who have celiac disease”

Lily Study
The LILY study is a celiac disease study that will measure the safety of the study medication, DONQ52, at targeting an immune complex known to cause celiac disease symptoms. There is no gluten challenge in this study. You may be compensated for time and travel.
ILLUMINATE-062 Study
Participants are needed for the ILLUMINATE-062 Study, which is looking at the safety and effectiveness of an investigational medication designed to break down gluten in the stomach compared with placebo in those with celiac disease who are on a gluten-free diet. The study will evaluate how well the investigational medication reduces celiac-related symptoms and intestinal damage due to gluten exposure.
Participants who have been diagnosed with celiac, which was confirmed by a biopsy, and have been on a gluten-free diet for at least 12 months are needed. Study-related care is provided at no cost and a travel stipend may be provided.

When Family Doesn’t Get Your Child’s Food Allergies
With the holiday season in full swing, many will be dealing with road trips, gift lists, and, of course, family. The job of teaching the food rules to close relatives–like grandparents, parental siblings and cousins–can be a continuing challenge. You’re providing information about your or your child’s medical needs. So why don’t family members just get it?
News, Events & Updates
Join us for an informative, virtual discussion with Arnold Han, MD PhD, of Columbia University, on Nov 29, 2 PM ET. He will discuss his research into the role of CD8 T-cells in celiac disease, and where he hopes it leads. Don’t miss out on this important event, sponsored by our friends at Crunchmaster Crackers!
The Beyond Celiac Community Summit, hosted September 30 in Greenwich, CT, was a tremendous success, allowing attendees to share their experiences and find comfort in knowing they are not alone in their journey. We don’t want anyone to feel left out, so we’ve updated select panels and speeches from the event to our website and Youtube channel. Listen, watch, and leave a comment if you enjoyed it!
