CAM 2026: Gluten is Like Glitter
For Celiac Awareness Month (CAM) 2026, we’re raising awareness of how tough it can be to avoid gluten. It’s like glitter: small, hard to clean up, and it gets everywhere! But like glitter, Beyond Celiac wants to be everywhere, helping you however you need!
May is Celiac Awareness Month. It’s a time to share facts about celiac disease, prioritize access to safe (and tasty!) gluten-free food, chat with family members about risk factors, and lean into our wonderful community. Here are a few ways to get involved this Celiac Awareness Month:
- Share information online—Post our free sample graphics and captions!
- Más allá de la celiaquía—Every step you take in this virtual 5K gets us closer to a cure!
- Take a survey—Go Beyond Celiac Insights (GBCI) gives people affected by celiac and non-celiac gluten sensitivity a voice in celiac disease research.
- Evening Beyond Celiac and Auction—Bid on items to support our cause, or, if you’ll be in Philadelphia, attend our annual gala in person.
- Check out other events, including a series of Celiac Disease Awareness baseball games with major MLB teams, including the Yankees and Cubs!

Trivia Question of the Month
Question
Does glutinous rice contain gluten?
Answer
No, glutinous rice, despite the name, does not contain any gluten. Glutinous rice, sometimes called sushi rice, sticky rice, or Asian rice, is gluten-free. It is called that because of the way it sticks together.
Glutinous rice flour is also gluten-free, though if you’re buying it you’ll want to review the ingredients list to ensure nothing else was added that may contain gluten.
Whether your child with celiac is headed to day camp or sleepaway camp, you may be concerned about how they’ll maintain their gluten-free diet outside of the home. Our free Summer Camp with Celiac Disease resource is a great way to get the conversation started with their camp counselor—print it out for them, and write in your child’s treatment plan for good measure!
Caregiver’s Corner is proudly sponsored by Jones Dairy Farm, maker of certified GF, all-natural sausage & naturally smoked meats. Bring a taste of summer camp home with this Jones favorite—customize with gluten-free bread and your favorite gluten-free ingredients.

Half on Gluten-Free Diet are Overly-Restrictive, Survey Shows
Research funded by Beyond Celiac and recently published in Nutrients found that half of people on the gluten-free diet are overly restrictive, potentially avoiding foods they don’t need to. Of all respondents, about 10% weren’t restrictive enough, and the remaining 40% hit the sweet spot of understanding the gluten-free diet—picking the right foods to avoid, no more and no less.

Voices of Celiac: Mia’s Story
“After seeing nine different doctors, who all diagnosed me with stress, anxiety, and female-induced issues, I finally found a doctor who sent me immediately to a gastroenterologist, who finally sent me for an endoscopy. Within 24 hours of that being performed, my [celiac disease] diagnosis was concrete.
Please always advocate for yourself and your body—if something feels wrong, don’t let anyone push you away until you get to the bottom of it. You know yourself and you know your body, you are capable and you are strong!”
