Letter from Alice: Happy New Year TWO You

Welcome to 2022! I hope everyone had a happy, gluten-free holiday season, and is feeling ready to jump into a new year.
January is always an opportunity to start fresh, with renewed vigor and creativity, and our work at Beyond Celiac is no different. We have lots of exciting news and events coming in 2022 and while I can’t reveal all of the surprises we have lined up just yet, I can talk about one things; we will be funding new, innovative research with an Early Career grant. In partnership with the Society for the Study of Celiac Disease (SSCD), Beyond Celiac is seeking applications from highly motivated and talented academic investigators for a grant to fund celiac disease research. By providing resources for the next generation of researchers, we’re encouraging talented scientists to dedicate their work to celiac disease. Grant applications close in February 2022. Learn more.
In addition to introducing new initiatives, we will of course continue work on projects from 2021, such as
- Recruiting for clinical trials like the Proactive study (PRV-015) and Solutions for Celiac study, and supporting the CeDLara study, all of which are developing treatments for celiac disease.
- Supporting researchers, like the team at Sheffield University studying how the brain is damaged by celiac disease, and how those changes affect mental health. Listen to the lead researchers from the Sheffield study discuss their work in a recording from our November Mini-Conference (timestamps 9:42–1:15:40). Other exciting research we support includes the team at Oxford University led by Paul Klenerman, which has identified increases in signatures of certain cells in the villi of celiac disease patients, even when they are on the gluten-free diet, and an increase in cells that are key players in the connection between the gut and the brain. This and other findings may offer some clues into future treatments and diagnostic tests.
- Using our patient registry app Go Beyond Celiac to collect self-reported data via surveys about the celiac disease patient experience and gluten-free living. If you want to get involved it’s always free to sign up and download the app!
- Our diversity work alongside the National Minority Quality Forum to ensure that no patient is missing a diagnosis due to their background and/or demographics. Everyone deserves to be properly diagnosed.
- And, as always, interacting with and supporting our community online through social media and Town Hall events!
Rest assured that all of us at Beyond Celiac are tackling the big problems facing the celiac disease community. We’ll be working on many promising projects in 2022, so stay tuned by following us on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, and subscribing to our email list. If you would like to support us more directly, you can become a Celiac Champion and donate any amount you like automatically on a recurring basis.
Our New Year’s resolution, as it was last year and the year before, is to find a treatment for celiac disease. We are closer than ever before to making that resolution a reality, and we hope you join us on the journey.
Together for a cure,
Alice

You are more likely to get migraines if you have celiac disease, especially if you are a woman
People with celiac disease get more headaches, including migraines, and women get more migraines than men, according to a new study. In the study of 1,000 adults with celiac disease registered at Shariati Hospital in Tehran who were matched with people who don’t have celiac disease, the prevalence of migraines was nearly double in those with celiac disease.

PROACTIVE Study
Are you still experiencing celiac disease symptoms despite your best efforts to follow a gluten-free diet?
The PROACTIVE Celiac Study is looking for people between the ages of 18 and 70, who have biopsy-confirmed celiac disease and have been on a gluten-free diet for at least the last 12 months. You will not be asked to ingest gluten in this study. The goal of this phase 2 clinical trial is to test the safety and effects of the investigational medication PRV-015. In combination with a gluten-free diet, PRV-015 aims to reduce symptoms and intestinal inflammation caused by accidental gluten exposure.
