Columbia Celiac Disease Symposium Adjusts to Coronavirus Restrictions

As Columbia University put restrictions on large gatherings due to concerns about coronavirus, the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia limited attendance at its Celiac Disease Symposium and offered the event via live webcast.
In the scientific session, celiac disease experts from around the world broadly covered topics including new treatments for celiac disease, the role of the microbiome, immune response, studies in large populations, the gluten-free diet, diagnosis and follow up care.
Brain Images Show Celiac Disease Related Damage

People with celiac disease have a greater risk of brain damage and mental health issues, according to a new study based on brain images and cognitive test scores.
Researchers from the University of Sheffield, Sheffield, UK, attributed the neurological damage to gluten exposure, including inadvertent exposure in those following the gluten-free diet.
The study concluded that patients with celiac disease “had cognitive deficit, worsened mental health and white matter changes based on analysis of brain images.”
New Surveys on Go Beyond Celiac
We’ve added two new important surveys to our Go Beyond Celiac database and app! These surveys will collect critical data on celiac disease and the new coronavirus COVID-19. The first survey will collect information on how the coronavirus is impacting our community during this unprecedented time, as well as information on managing celiac disease during a pandemic and changes in habits. The second new survey covers those with celiac disease who have been diagnosed with COVID-19 so that we can better answer questions about how having celiac disease affects risk levels, treatment and more.
