New research from Italy has offered more evidence of the link between celiac disease and fertility issues.

Researchers interviewed 62 celiac women and 186 healthy controls about their reproductive health. Nearly 20% of celiac women reported experiencing amenorrhea, or loss of menstrual cycle, compared to about 2% of healthy women. Women with celiac disease were also estimated to be four times more likely to experience at least one complication during pregnancy, according to the study.

Researchers concluded that serological screening for celiac disease should be considered in women experiencing reproductive issues.
