A new study finds celiac disease is associated with death resulting from IHD.

Just in time for American Heart Month, a study has been released that links celiac disease to increased risk of ischemic heart disease.

Conducted in Sweden, the study compared records of myocardial infarction or angina pectoris from Swedish national registers , biopsy data on celiac disease and small intestinal inflammation from 28 pathology departments and 3,658 individuals with latent celiac disease (defined as having positive serology but normal mucosa).

Researchers found that celiac disease and small intestinal inflammation “were both associated with death resulting from IHD,” according to the study. Latent celiac disease did not appear to have a connection.

The researchers concluded that individuals with celiac disease or small intestinal inflammation may face an increased risk of IHD.

The study was published by the American Heart Association on Jan. 24: http://circ.ahajournals.org/cgi/content/abstract/CIRCULATIONAHA.110.965624v1
