Military health research can help greater public and curb healthcare costs, letter says.

The National Foundation for Celiac Awareness (NFCA) has joined 19 other organizations in a call for continued funding of the Peer Reviewed Cancer Research Program (PRCRP). The organizations submitted a joint letter to the Chairmen and Ranking Members of the House Appropriations Committee and Defense Subcommittee that highlighted examples of PRCRP funds at work.

PRCRP supports medical research of cancers affecting military personnel and their families. Research areas include skin cancers, pancreatic cancer, colorectal cancer, pediatric brain tumors, and more.

As the letter points out, the benefits of PRCRP go beyond the military field:

“The PRCRP offers an opportunity to advance research with relevance to military service members and their families, and oftentimes leads to innovative research that is viewed as too risky or preliminary for the National Institutes of Health or the National Cancer Institute to support.”

The organizations also noted that findings from PRCRP supported initiatives could save lives and reduce healthcare costs.
