As a registered dietitian nutritionist specializing in gluten-related disorders, I knew I wanted to become involved with one of the advocacy/support group organizations.
All of the organizations do wonderful and much-needed work to raise awareness and provide support and education. Each has their areas of specialty and, together, they have made much progress in a short period of time. Being nutrition communications is a specialty of mine, I was attracted to the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness (NFCA) for the great job they do in sharing information and interacting with the public.
Over the past few years, I have had the honor of being a part of the NFCA community, working with almost the entire staff on educational platforms for the public, including being an “Answers from a Dietitian” blogger, conducting educational webinars, and assisting in the development and implementation of their education and GREAT Kitchens foodservice training programs. My involvement has allowed me to interact with various members of the staff on a regular basis and it never ceases to amaze me how dedicated they all are to NFCA’s mission. Never have I felt that it was a job for them to do what they do; it is, without a doubt, their passion.
I also have the honor of serving on NFCA’s Scientific/Medical Advisory Council. To be able to weigh in and provide input on the direction of an organization dedicated to raising awareness for celiac disease and gluten-related disorders is an absolute pleasure. To engage with the highly-esteemed medical and health professionals on the Council is humbling and an opportunity for me to further my education on the issue. To meet NFCA’s constituents and Board of Advisors is always a delight and an opportunity to collaborate to move forward the mission.
Every opportunity I have had to engage with NFCA’s staff, advisors, constituents and partners has been positive. Every program they’ve implemented I’ve been proud to attend and be a part of.
Congratulations to Alice Bast and the NFCA staff for 10 years of outstanding public service to the gluten-free community. We are grateful for your endless efforts to raise awareness, get people diagnosed and make it easier to live a robust gluten-free life. I’m on board for the ride for the next 10 years.
