Note from Alice: Our Plan for Creating Pathways to Cure Celiac Disease
Dear Beyond Celiac Community,
I am thrilled to announce the unveiling of the Beyond Celiac Science Plan. Our Chief Scientific Officer, Marie Robert, MD, along with our new Scientific Advisory Council, have created this strategic plan to create pathways to treatments and cure for celiac disease. Through this plan, Beyond Celiac is employing a number of strategies to attract, enable and increase the pool of outstanding scientists to the celiac disease field, as well as to expand our registry program, Go Beyond Celiac .
We’ve already kick-started the Science Plan with our very first research grant, The Society for the Study of Celiac Disease – Beyond Celiac Early Career Research Award, which was awarded last month. We created the grant and partnered with the Society for the Study of Celiac Disease to attract exceptionally promising early career academic investigators to the field of celiac disease research. The winner of the award, Dr. Marisa Gallant Stahl of Children’s Hospital Colorado, will use the grant as part of an ongoing study to follow asymptomatic children who have the antibodies to celiac disease to determine the potential benefits and harms of treating them with the gluten-free diet.
And we’re not stopping there! We are currently accepting applications for two more research grants for scientists more established in their fields.
We are so excited to be accelerating research directly in a field that is woefully underfunded. The more research, the better the understanding of this and other autoimmune diseases, and the faster the track to real treatments and a cure for this serious autoimmune disease. We’re working hard for everyone suffering with this disease—those not healing, those with refractory celiac disease, those who want to eat without fear and just feel normal, those who have suffered miscarriages and fertility issues related to celiac disease and everyone recently diagnosed that may feel hopeless. We’re funding research and making things happen, but we can do so even faster with help from YOU. So please consider donating to Beyond Celiac research efforts today for a future Beyond Celiac.
We’d also love to hear YOUR THOUGHTS on our science plan and research grants. Join us for upcoming discussions and Facebook Live videos on the topics on our Facebook page.
To Living Life Beyond Celiac,
Alice

Why Does Someone Get Celiac Disease?
Another virus has been added to the list of common viral infections suspected as possible reasons celiac disease develops, according to a new study.
Upending Some Beliefs About Celiac Disease
Some beliefs about celiac disease have been “upended” by increasing scientific research according to a broad review of the condition in the latest edition of the journal Gastroenterology Clinics.
Help Build a Brighter Future for Those with Celiac Disease
If you have been diagnosed with celiac disease and have been on a gluten-free diet, but wished there were more you could do for yourself and others, consider participating in a clinical research study. Your participation helps advance scientific knowledge and the development of new treatments for celiac disease.
