Summer of Science

Rooted in science from the start, twenty years ago, Beyond Celiac educated thousands of medical professionals, increasing celiac diagnosis rates from 3% to nearly 50%. Today, we drive more research activities than ever before, from organizing patient-led meetings with the FDA to address challenges in clinical trials to investing $3 million to date in research aimed at identifying the cause and effects of celiac disease. All of our work ultimately drives progress toward treatments for celiac disease.

Right now, with your help, we are making strides toward a treatment beyond the gluten-free diet with 8 current research projects. During June, we will leap three steps for every dollar raised toward our $15,000 goal, thanks to a dedicated celiac community member’s gift.

Let’s seize this opportunity! Every dollar fuels the vital research that will bring us a cure.

Trivia Question of the Month

QUESTION: What percent of parents with a child under 18 mistakenly believe that it is fine for a child with celiac disease to eat food served at birthday parties, snacks after their sports team game, and other special occasion situations even though it is not
gluten-free because it’s not a daily occurrence.

ANSWER: 32%. Note that no one with celiac should ever eat gluten, regardless of the severity of their symptoms, nor the special occasion.

Voices of Celiac: Kendra’s StoryKendra and her gluten detection service dog Suki sit in front of a fence

“I had a senior dog and I knew I wanted another dog, and I started to seriously think a gluten detection service dog may be an option. I couldn’t afford a fully-trained one, but an owner-trained one was an option. COVID gave me the time at home to start the process and I was very fortunate to get a puppy. I worked with a trainer over Zoom who taught me what to do. Suki, my gluten detection dog, now checks all my food, medicine, and personal care products for gluten. She travels with me everywhere, and I am so thankful to have her.”
