August 2024

August 6, 2024

As the carefree summer days make way for the exciting back-to-school hustle, we understand the stress this transition can bring, especially for those coping with food restrictions. However, fear not—Beyond Celiac is here to help!

While we continue to make strides toward a breakthrough treatment for celiac disease, we are also fully aware of the daily challenges faced by our community. A treatment is coming, but you deserve to eat and live without fear in the meantime, too. I am proud to announce the launch of our brand new Resource Library, including an initial batch of ten new resources for those of us on the gluten-free diet.

The Resource Library is your hub for tools related to living with celiac disease. Here, you can explore a variety of content types, including informative PDFs, engaging articles, insightful videos, and enriching audio resources. Delve into topics such as the gluten-free diet, dining out, managing school years, navigating psychosocial challenges, and much more. Our library includes some of our tried-and-true classics and exciting new resources, such as:

  • Celiac Disease in the Classroom: Share this comprehensive resource with teachers and school personnel to help ensure a celiac-safe classroom for day-to-day activities and during celebrations.
  • Fact vs. Fiction: We debunk twenty common myths about celiac disease and the gluten-free diet, empowering you with accurate information.
  • Advocating for Yourself in a Restaurant Setting: This short video contains some ideas for preparing for dining out and advocating for yourself with a server or chef.

And that’s just the beginning! Whether you were diagnosed last week or decades ago, I encourage you to explore this growing collection of professional-grade resources. It’s one thing to know the ins and outs of celiac disease; it’s quite another to live it. These resources, with more on the way, have been crafted to help you navigate the challenges of living with celiac disease, and we hope you’ll let us know how they work for you.

The Resource Library was made possible through the inspiration and support of The Moca Foundation. For 21 years, Beyond Celiac has relied solely on the generous financial support of our community. Contributions of all sizes drive our research initiatives, educational materials, and advocacy campaigns. Please join us in working toward a world where people with celiac disease can eat without fear. Add your support today!

Building upon two decades of progress driven by our community, we are thrilled to embark on our most ambitious endeavor yet— Beyond Celiac Investments (BCI), our venture philanthropy initiative. By engaging this investment strategy, we will dramatically accelerate the development of celiac disease treatments. Imagine a world where we do not need to educate schools and restaurants to keep ourselves and our children safe! BCI is propelling us toward this future faster than ever.

It is important to note that all our advancements, including BCI, are made possible through the support of our community. Generous donors and investors have already raised over $1 million of our initial $2 million BCI investment goal. Let’s connect if you would like to contribute to this transformative fund. We are excited to share the detailed proposal and strategies with all interested partners.

While we tirelessly pursue our goal of developing treatments and a cure, we remain committed to supporting a healthy, fulfilling present. Remember to visit the Resource Library for managing those challenging moments. And remember that every day, because of your support, Beyond Celiac strives toward a world with fewer challenges thanks to advancements in celiac disease treatment.

Have a wonderful, cool August! I look forward to all that we will accomplish together in the coming months!

Together for a cure,

—Alice Bast, CEO

Voices of Celiac: Lana’s Story

“I had ever-worsening osteoporosis, and oral meds did not help. I eventually took bone density injections every six months for two years, and had two bone density infusions at the hospital. In 2021, my DEXA scan was normal, they thought I was ‘cured,’ and then the next scan showed severe osteoporosis again. At that point, we knew there was something underlying going on. I was then diagnosed with celiac disease.

Being recently diagnosed, there is a mourning period you go through for the life you once had. I wasn’t diagnosed until I was 69 years old, which means that I got to live a lot of my life ‘normally.'”

Celiac Disease Linked to Eating Disorders, Even Anorexia

People with celiac disease often have an uncomfortable relationship with food, one that is often a lifelong battle. Before their celiac diagnosis, food made them sick. After their diagnosis, food still often makes them sick, and eating remains a high-maintenance affair. So it makes sense that, according to a Swedish study, celiac disease patients experience higher rates of anorexia nervosa (or AN) compared to control subjects.
