Celiac disease and non-celiac gluten sensitivity (‘gluten sensitivity’) were the center of attention in this week’s Twitter chat with Dr. Richard Besser, ABC News’ chief health and medical correspondent. Along with highlights from the #abcDrBchat with Dr. Besser, ABC News published a video featuring TV-personality Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Dr. Peter Green of the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University.
Hasselbeck and Dr. Green shared their very different views on the gluten-free diet and who should be on it during the 5-minute segment. While Hasselbeck touted the perceived benefits of a gluten-free diet for everyone, Dr. Green emphasized people should only go gluten-free if they have a medical reason to do so, emphasizing that the gluten-free diet can be low in fiber and other essential vitamins and minerals.
