Mikayla Morell, founder of “Silly Acts for Celiac,” was diagnosed with celiac disease and has dedicated much of her time and effort to raising awareness about the disease. The organization’s second annual event was held on May 30, 2015.

The event included a talent show in which many participants performed their “silly acts” to raise money and increase awareness for celiac disease. There were also concessions, raffles, and a water balloon toss.

This year’s event raised almost $1,400, which is more than double the amount raised at last year’s event. Mikayla donated that money directly to the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness (NFCA).

Along with continuing to inform more people about celiac disease, Mikayla’s goal was to become a member of the Samuel Gee Society, which is made up of major donors who give $1000 or more to NFCA. The society is named after Samuel Gee, who developed the first modern, complete description of celiac disease and linked its treatment to strict dietary control through a gluten-free diet.
