NFCA Launches Women’s Health Section on CeliacCentral.org

Two-part initiative includes information for obstetric/gynecologic community and brochure for patients.

As celiac disease awareness increases, many are familiarizing themselves with the gastrointestinal symptoms of the disorder. However, the autoimmune disease can also affect the reproductive system, leading to complications like infertility, adverse pregnancy outcomes and other women’s health issues.

The National Foundation for Celiac Awareness (NFCA) encourages women’s health practitioners to educate themselves and their patients about celiac disease and proper treatment through the gluten-free diet. In collaboration with the Celiac Center at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, NFCA has developed materials to make this clinician education possible.

Launched on Nov. 4, 2010, Celiac Disease and Women’s Health: A Guide to Understanding is NFCA’s newest addition to its Education tab. The materials in this section are designed to empower women’s health practitioners to improve detection, diagnosis and treatment of celiac disease in women, so they and their future children can lead healthy lives.

Following this premiere, NFCA will soon post a brochure specially designed for patients on the topic of celiac disease and women’s health. The brochure will be posted in the Clinician Resources page in the Women’s Health section, as well as on NFCA’s Printable Guides pages.
