Illinois College Senior Focuses Research on Celiac Disease

Millikin University student is examining peptides and their relationship with gluten metabolism and celiac disease.

Illinois paper the Daily Herald has highlighted a local college senior for her work in the celiac disease research field.

Stephanie Gates will enter her senior year at Millikin University in Decatur, IL, this fall, where she is conducting an ongoing research project to better understand the role of gluten in celiac disease. Specifically, Stephanie will be synthesizing peptides and examining gluten metabolism, the Daily Herald noted.

The 21-year-old already has an impressive resume, having interned at Tunghai University in Taiwan and, this year, winning a coveted role in the Society of Chemical Industry Scholars program, a prestigious career development initiative targeted for chemistry and chemical engineering students. There are only 29 slots nationwide.

After graduation, Stephanie plans to pursue a doctorate in biochemistry or organic chemistry. As for a career, she has her sights set on the greater good. “That’s part of the draw I have to pharmaceutical research, knowing you’re having a direct impact on someone’s quality of life,” Stephanie said.
