Cash registers ring up $54,000 for Beyond Celiac research

Party City customers’ donations will advance treatments and speed research for a cure

Beyond Celiac has received $54,000 for celiac disease research from donations made by shoppers at Party City check-out registers during Celiac Awareness Month.

In the first national campaign of its type to support celiac disease, Party City store customers were asked to donate $1, $3 or $5 as they were making purchases.

“Beyond Celiac plans to use the money to help fund its new Young Investigator Award program and other initiative designed specifically to accelerate research,” said Beyond Celiac Board Chair Alan M. Ehrlich, M.D.

In addition to the register campaign, the national party goods retailer also made a direct donation to help raise awareness among their shoppers and support the celiac disease community.

“We are very heartened by the generosity of Party City and its customers,” Ehrlich said.

Accelerating treatments and a cure for celiac disease depends upon engaging outstanding clinical and basic scientists in careers devoted to celiac disease research, he noted.

Beyond Celiac launched its Science Department earlier this year and has made the commitment to expand the number of researchers in the field by recruiting young investigators – post-doctoral scientists at the beginning of their careers whose work will be mentored by established celiac disease researchers. In its first year, Beyond Celiac plans to fund two Young Investigator awards. Party City proceeds will support the Beyond Celiac research program.
