Asheville, NC Becomes Gluten-Free Destination

More than 20 restaurants were trained in gluten-free food prep through NFCA’s GREAT Kitchens program.

Exciting news for North Carolina area celiacs, or anyone looking to plan a trip this summer – Asheville, NC is now a gluten-free celiac-friendly destination. Last month, the Asheville Independent Restaurant Association(AIR) recruited more than 20 of the city’s finest kitchens to participate in NFCA’s GREAT Kitchens program!

AIR’s mission is to unite the independent restaurant community of Asheville NC as committed to local people, local philanthropies, local businesses, local food and the local economy, with a promise to preserve the authenticity of its mountain home through genuine food and signature hospitality.

We thank these wonderful establishments, institutions, and individuals for their commitment to providing safe and delicious gluten-free food, as well as their dedicated support of the celiac community.

Discover an Asheville landmark and local favorite! Located on historic Pack Square, with plenty of patio seating overlooking the neo-gothic Jackson Building and I.M. Pei’s resplendently modern Akzona Building, Bistro 1896 is the perfect spot to linger over that second bottle of wine. Bistro 1896 offers innovative American cuisine with a decidedly chic twist. Menu favorites include starters such as oysters on the half shell and fried green tomato napoleon, and entrees like the Cajun and polenta stack and stuffed beef tenderloin.

Bouchon, the French word for cork, is also the colloquial expression for a type of bistro that existed for centuries in the Lyon area of France where chef/owner Michael Baudouin was born. The atmosphere is warm and inviting. Michael describes his menu as “French comfort food”. Bouchon has a full bar and lighter offerings such as escargot, French onion soup and country pate. It is the perfect place to mingle and munch and of course, sip a glass of vin.
