Low bone mineral content can increase a child’s potential risk for developing osteoporosis. The study recommends that screening bone mineral content levels in children newly diagnosed with celiac disease may help in preventing this debilitating illness.

The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) Division of Gastroenterology and Nutrition colleagues Jatla Muralidhar, Zemel S. Babette , and Patricia Bierly  worked with Dr. Verma on the study and contributed to the journal publication. Dr. Verma is section chief of the Gastroenterology and Nutrition department at CHOP and director of the hospital’s Center for Celiac Disease.
