Hasselbeck addresses charges of plagiarism

“The G-Free Diet: A Gluten-Free Survival Guide” subject of copyright infringement suit.

Elisabeth Hasselbeck took to her own show defending her new book, “The G-Free Diet: A Gluten-Free Survival Guide, against plagiarism claims filed in a Massachusetts court earlier this week.

"I just want to assure you the allegations are without merit and are being handled appropriately," Hasselbeck said briefly during Wednesday’s episode of The View.

Representatives for Hasselbeck also issued a statement denying the allegations:

"Neither (publishers) Center Street nor Elisabeth Hasselbeck has been served with the complaint in this action. However, there is no basis for the allegations in the complaint as published in the press. Ms. Hasselbeck worked diligently and tirelessly on her book and is disappointed in this attempt to discredit her work and her ability to bring this important message to the public,"

News broke Tuesday June 23rd that Falmouth, MA author Susan Hassett filed a federal lawsuit against Hasselbeck. Hasset argues that“The G-Free Diet: A Gluten-Free Survival Guide” infringes upon the copyrights of her own book, “Living with Celiac Disease”.

Hasset claims to have sent Hasselbeck a copy of her self-published book via certified mail back in April 2008. Hassett says she included a homemade cooking video, business card, newspaper clipping, and personal note as well.

In documents recovered from TMZ.com, Hasset’s lawyer provides an itemized list of similarities between the books which, “without further proof, would allow a judge or jury to reasonably conclude that Elizabeth Hasselbeck plagiarized Susan Hasset’s book, ‘Living with Celiac Disease’, and a serious copyright infringement has occurred…”
