Hasselbeck: Get Tested Before Starting Gluten-Free Diet

“The View” co-host talks celiac disease and gluten-free on "Good Morning America."

If you suspect you may have celiac disease, get tested before going gluten-free. That’s one of the tips celiac celeb Elisabeth Hasselbeck shared when she sat down with George Stephanopoulos on “Good Morning America.” Author of The G-Free Diet, Hasselbeck recalled the symptoms she endured for nearly 10 years before a doctor finally diagnosed her with celiac disease.

Hasselbeck stressed the importance of getting tested for celiac disease before adopting a gluten-free diet. For those who do need to go gluten-free, there are a variety of options for dining in or out – just watch out for marinades, gravies and sauces that may have hidden gluten, Hasselbeck noted. “Soy sauce tripped me up for years,” she said.

As for nutrition, Hasselbeck encouraged gluten-free eaters to reach for whole grains that are safe to eat, such as amaranth or quinoa. When you choose whole foods over processed gluten-free options, “You’re actually giving your body more than it ever had,” she said.
