Gassy while following a gluten-free diet

I am sure I am only eating gluten-free food, but every evening I get gassy. If I am
following the gluten-free diet, why is that happening to me?




Hi Nancy. You are doing the right thing by continuing to eat only gluten-free food. Gas is completely normal in people with celiac disease and also in people who do not have celiac disease. It is very individual in that some people are more likely to produce gas with certain foods than others. If the gas seems to have increased or is causing you discomfort or pain, please talk to your physician about it.

There are many different foods that can cause the feeling of being “gassy.” One suggestion is to journal the foods you are eating and note the feelings of gas or discomfort associated with those foods. You can then try to eliminate foods that are causing you the most gas.

Some foods that can cause gas are lactose (in milk and dairy), cabbage, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, beans and legumes, foods high in soluble fiber, fruit and other vegetables.
