Children’s Book Recommendations

February 08, 2011

Question:

Which children’s book about celiac do you recommend for my newly diagnosed daughter? She’s 5.

From,

Dave

Answer:

Hi Dave. Thank you for your question, and kudos to you for trying to find resources for your daughter to help her better understand her celiac diagnosis. I have two children, ages 7 and 9, and as I mom I think it is so important to provide our children with the tools they need to enable them to take control over their own health, even at a young age.

There are several wonderful books on celiac disease that are specifically geared towards younger children. How I Eat Without Wheat, by Karen Fine, is a fun rhyming book that celebrates all the wonderful foods that are still available to someone with celiac disease.

Another fun book for young children is called Eating Gluten-Free with Emily, by Bonnie J. Kruska. In this story, Emily (also 5 years old) learns that even though living with celiac disease isn’t always easy, she’s a very special girl, and her family is always there to support her on her gluten-free journey.

Finally, one more book I want to share with you is an activity book called Gluten-Free Friends: An Activity Book for Kids,by registered dietitian Nancy Patin Falini. This is a fabulous book full of information on living a gluten-free lifestyle along with lots of fun activities that you and your daughter can do together.

All of these books are available through Amazon. I wish you and your daughter a wonderful gluten-free journey together!

In good health,

EA Stewart, BS, MBA, RD
